I dunno about that one…. My guess would have been quite the opposite ( when it comes to holocaust survivors) — although I never really tried to check the numbers, I believe that their suicide rates are much, much lower then with the rest of the population…

I am basing my guess on comparison with the survivors of old communist regimes here… The prisons in Albania during Enver Hoxha…, Yugoslavia-s “Goli Otok” (an infamous prison-island in what is now Croatia) — none of the ones who survived 10, 20 sometimes even more , years in those prisons, did not go on killing themselves once it was all over…most of them died from old age.. the others are still around… I mean, these people are/were the real survivors- and if they had enough reasons to endure everything that they did when things were bad… they are not going to crack later on

There is a lot to be said about the “older” way of organizing societies… the endless drive for “individuality” which started off in the western countries and has now spread through the planet, has not given any positive results…. on the contrary, the societies with a collective approach ( read china, Vietnam etc…) have proven to be much more functional and efficient even in the capitalist setting.

Yes, I do understand that for a lot of people here on medium, just the idea of someone saying that a person should give much more importance to everything and everyone besides him/her self ( family, society, nation….) sound heretic, the truth is that the people who do not place themselves and their interest first seem to have much better and fulfilling lives… Just like it seems that human beings were not made to function happily unless they are struggling, it also appears that humans are not programed to function properly in a context in which an individual is more important than the group

Which brings us back to Roma , who ( you are right about it) do have the “one for all and all for one” ethic when it comes to dealing with or about their group.

And I am definitely interested in your ideas, so thank you for sharing …I am gonna start reading “A just solution” as soon as I get out of the office…Truth be told, it has been a while since I started toying with some ideas of my own when it comes to this, and similar subjects, but I am still not ready to publish any of it — so, seeing what other people have been doing ( especially the ones who seem to have healthy opinions) is a big help…
